Our Mission

Californians for Energy Choice is a statewide coalition of organizations and communities using the State's 2002 Community Choice energy law to help our communities get electricity from cleaner, less expensive and locally managed sources rather than the high-priced, fossil fuel energy provided by the corporate monopoly utilities.

Why Community Choice

Shifting to locally-generated and locally-controlled cleaner electricity means we can:

• Put tens of thousands of Californians to work with new jobs in clean energy and energy efficiency
• Save consumers money on their utility bills
• Provide lower income communities and workers with a leg up to join the new green economy
• Help clean up our air and water
• Establish California as a global leader in addressing the climate crisis

What We Do

Californians for Energy Choice provides assistance and support to local advocates and groups working to establish Community Choice programs that maximize the generation of locally-installed clean energy. We also work on the local and state level to defend and improve laws and regulations that strengthen and expand the adoption of Community Choice to as many California communities as possible.

Our History

Californians for Energy Choice formed in 2014 in response to a legislative attempt by the State's monopoly utilities to destroy Community Choice in California. A broad coalition of community, environmental, business, and labor groups came together to successfully defeat AB 2145. After defeating the bill, members of the coalition formalized Californians for Energy Choice as an ongoing advocacy organization.
